Part 1 in a series on the 2025 Microsoft Work Trend Index Report
by Shana Burg, content director for Regain Your Time and the author of “Poof! The Disappearance of a Writer in the Age of AI.”
Are you a leader feeling a little overwhelmed by the challenge of integrating AI into your workflow? Microsoft recently released the 2025 Work Trend Index Annual Report. The research is based on trillions of Microsoft 365 productivity signals, which are patterns of activity like meetings, messages, and document edits, captured from workplace software.
The report also incorporates results from a survey of 31,000 knowledge workers, as well as insights from economists, futurists, scientists, academics, and the leaders of 12 AI companies built with an AI-first structure.

The findings point to a global challenge that is tripping up businesses large and small. What is it? The seemingly infinite workday. According to the study, AI will eventually solve the problem.

What is a ‘Frontier Firm’?

The title of this year’s Work Trend Index Report is, “2025: The Year The Frontier Firm Is Born.” So what exactly is a Frontier Firm? It’s a new business model that is already beginning to emerge. As Microsoft defines it, the Frontier Firm is:
“…powered by intelligence on tap, run by human-agent teams, and defined by a new role for every employee: the agent boss. These firms are redesigning business processes around AI and agents to scale rapidly, operate with agility, and generate value faster than traditional companies.”
The Microsoft study’s authors contend that once every company is a Frontier Firm, AI will help us regain work-life balance. According to the study, while it may take decades to complete the transition, in the next 2-5 years every organization will set out on the journey to becoming a Frontier Firm.
But how do we get from here—a knowledge work environment that too often is defined by endless distraction, lagging workflow management skills, constant communications—to the Frontier Firm? How will we manage the transition? It’s going to be a wild ride, so maybe some Dramamine will help!
The Infinite Workday

A big part of the 2025 Work Trend Index Report is devoted to documenting the unmanageable pace at which we currently attempt to work.
The statistics are eye-opening. Here are just a few findings from the report:
- 60% – The portion of meetings that are ad hoc-or called in-the-moment.
- 275 – The average number of times employees are interrupted by these ad-hoc meetings, email, or chat every day. That’s once every 2 minutes during core work hours.
- 58 – The number of chats sent daily outside the typical 9-to-5 workday. This is a 15% year-over-year increase.
The Role of Attention Management
According to Maura, the way forward is for leaders to proactively build a culture of productivity—rooted in attention management—that supports workers’ ability to focus on their most significant results.
By learning attention management skills, team members can structure their days to resist the distractions that have a high cost to individuals and organizations.
The Microsoft report makes clear that the burnout so many of Maura’s clients feel is not due to their own shortcomings and inability to keep up; instead, the current pace of work outstrips any human’s ability to stay on top of the demands.
“Intelligence on Tap”
Survey respondents say that they turn to AI to provide capabilities that humans don’t possess. These capabilities include:
- being available to customers 24/7
- providing an endless stream of ideas on demand
- having infinite energy for repetitive tasks
Taken together, the study authors refer to these AI superpowers as “intelligence on tap.”
The report shows that leaders are increasingly turning to AI agents and their “intelligence on tap” to solve the problem of never-ending demand that human workers can’t possibly meet on their own.
What exactly is an AI agent?

The report defines an AI agent as “an AI-powered system that can reason, plan, and act to complete tasks or entire workflows autonomously, with human oversight at key moments.”
An AI agent is smart software that can make decisions and act on its own to achieve business goals. It gathers information, analyzes data, and automatically completes tasks—such as handling customer requests or expediting workflows—without constant human supervision.
AI agents learn and improve with experience, offering increased efficiency, cost savings, and better customer experiences. Unlike traditional tools, they operate independently, making them valuable for automating complex or repetitive tasks in any business.
The Microsoft report provides case studies from companies in a variety of industries that are already using AI agents to increase revenue. These include an AI agent concierge for a cruise line that fields thousands of requests from guests, and an AI agent for a global beauty company that instantly consolidates consumer insights into actionable intelligence.
What to Expect Next in the Age of AI

According to this study, the journey to becoming a Frontier Firm involves traveling through these three phases:
Phase 1: Every human employee uses an AI assistant that handles repetitive tasks, enabling the humans to do the same work faster
Phase 2: Agents join teams as “digital colleagues” that perform specific tasks with human oversight. These may be tasks the humans do not even know how to do on their own.
Phase 3: While human leaders set direction, AI agents independently complete entire business processes or workflows. The AI agents will turn to the humans to resolve exceptions and for overall guidance.
It’s important to note that companies will not necessarily progress through the phases in sequential order and not necessarily one at a time. An organization could be in all three phases at once.
Microsoft: The New Org Chart

As the Frontier Firm emerges, teams will no longer be organized by function, but instead, they will be organized to achieve a particular outcome. AI agents that excel at particular tasks will be assigned a problem, and guided by a human leader.
Of course, this transition will lead to disruption in jobs that humans currently hold, but it will also lead to the creation of new jobs we can’t yet imagine. For example, every human worker will be asked to learn skills that never existed just a short time ago. Key among these will be the skill of managing AI agents.
The study says:
“Also rising are human strengths like conflict mitigation, adaptability, process automation, and innovative thinking—showing that the future belongs to those who can pair deep AI capabilities with the skills machines can’t replicate.”
Already generative AI is disrupting the jobs of copywriters, customer service agents, junior programmers, and graphic designers, while at the same time, creating new jobs in prompt engineering, AI training, AI ethics and safety specialists, model trainers, LLM auditors, and synthetic media creators.
This is personal to me: A few years ago, in November 2022, ChatGPT was introduced to the masses. The writing skills I spent my entire life honing were suddenly accessible to everyone.
The journey out of the wreckage of my career as I once knew it has been extremely painful and extremely exciting at the same time. I’m happy to report that after some upskilling, I’m now incorporating AI into my writing process. I’m also a certified “AI Trainer” – a job that didn’t exist a few years ago.
The good news is that humans who can skillfully deploy AI are poised to succeed.
AI and the Frontier Firms: Managing The Transition

A transition as seismic as the one we are currently living through can certainly be frightening and stressful, as leaders scramble to adapt and turn their businesses into Frontier Firms. Just as the Industrial Revolution didn’t happen overnight, the Microsoft report states that it will take decades before the full transition to Frontier Firms is complete.
In the meantime, with workers fearful of being replaced by AI, skyrocketing pressure on them to perform, and an environment that is full of constant distractions, we should remember that people are still necessary, and good talent is still a competitive advantage. So leaders must proactively work to create a culture that supports the human ability to adapt to the increasing pace of business, and accomplish more with less stress.
More than ever, team members and leaders alike need to learn modern productivity skills like attention management, rather than outdated “time management” techniques.
A workflow management system like Maura’s Empowered Productivity System is designed to help people and teams conquer distractions and unleash their best human abilities. After all, a key component of the Frontier Firm is human/AI partnerships that pair the best skills of each.
